As Spurs and England Legend Jimmy Greaves used to say, “It’s a funny old game.” And nothing could be much further from the truth as many talented Spanish youngsters end up leaving the game as soon as their junior football life end.
One company looking towards making a difference and developing talented Spanish footballers is Sol Sports Management. Based in Alicante, over the past seven years they have organised many football camps, worked with visiting International and Professional “A” and youth teams, welcomed the likes of former Liverpool Legends Roy Evans and Steve McMahon and partnered with local Football Academies, in their quest to discover talented youngsters.
They are one of the first Spanish sports agencies to look at developing the talent on their doorstep and highlighting some of the unique skills that Spanish players have that are lacking in the UK. Their latest recruit is former CD Torrevieja striker Brandon Nicol, a twenty-year old that they have identified as having the footballing qualities that should appeal to a British team.
Brandon is two footed, fast, a natural winger but who can play almost any position, has excellent one-touch pas and control, is strong in the air and loves to scare defenders by running at them at pace. In the last season and a half he scored 14 goals and had 39 assists.
Sol Sports Management are not the first to notice that Spanish youngsters have special skills, especially in terms of ball control and higher fitness levels but they are one of the first to start promoting Spanish talent to UK scouts and agents.
Brandon added, “I’d be very content to make a living wage playing a sport I love. My focus is on finding a good team and coach to work with that will help me reach my full potential and to hopefully be recognised by the Northern Ireland selectors, which will provide me with a showcase and to play at the highest level.” It is after all, a funny old game.
